Deb and her art exude a refreshing honesty and curiosity. Using a blend of impressionism and abstraction, she paints the human face, figure, and intimate landscapes each with their own stories. Searching for a touch of humanity, she captures the light in nature, as well as an inner light unique to every subject.
She explains, “Although there is always some element of myself in my painting, current works feel even more intentionally personal. I am reminded to enjoy life as it is, responding in the here and now, rather than pressing ahead. This realization has saturated my work. I am revising old photos for subject matter as a way of reaching back into myself and my personal growth.”
Her fascination with loose, abstract brushwork and unorthodox painting techniques comes with a desire to emulate oil paint with benefit of watercolorʼs transparent fluidity. All types of water-soluble mediums are boldly brushed, smudged, and scraped to energize and add texture to her composition, layer upon layer. The risk-taking results are dynamic and alive, credited to “no rules, just feeling.”
Deb was born into a family of makers – a tailoring, fly tying, woodworking, banjo strumming clan. Her choice, FOOD. With an MBA and a career in hotel/restaurant management and marketing, she fed her inner artist surrounded by culinary, design genius, and patrons looking for creative dining experiences. A central Pennsylvania native and Penn State alumna, her home and studio are currently in Venice, Florida.
